PCN volunteers work for free – because they’re priceless

We say our hard working PCN volunteers are priceless, but one way of estimating the contribution they make to the success of our community programs is to count the hours they spend supporting our educational and population health projects. Over the last twelve months, our volunteers have contributed around 400 hours, working on PCN promotions, developing materials, helping run our services and more.

However, simply calculating hours does not even begin to show our appreciation of the impact volunteers have on the PCN’s efforts in promoting community wellness. It was therefore a privilege for us to nominate our more than 55 volunteers for the Town of Canmore Mayor’s Awards for Volunteer Excellence in the corporate not-for-profit category. At the mid-April community reception to celebrate volunteerism, Canmore Mayor John Borrowman is reported as commenting that without the work that volunteers do, the community just wouldn’t be what it is.

Dedication and commitment

PCN volunteers demonstrate their dedication and enthusiasm in many ways. For example, fifty committed volunteers regularly arrive in small groups to sit at our board table where, over the last twelve months, they have put together over 20,000 sexual health promotion packages for distribution throughout Bow Valley communities. This is a fiddly job that requires nimble fingers, careful assembly and perfectly aligned label placement. They contributed around 315 hours to this important outreach aimed at reducing the incidence of sexually transmitted infections.

Vital to the success of our Adult Indoor Walking Program (a joint project with the Town of Canmore), run at the Canmore Recreation Centre Walking Lane, were the efforts of ten of our volunteers who donated over 65 hours of their time to the program. They first prepared materials and signed up participants. Then, for three months, at sessions run two days a week, they led and encouraged the more than 100 registered walkers from local communities, helping build a social and supportive environment.

Admin and organizational skills

It was another twelve hours of hard work that enabled the PCN to mail out our annual patient satisfaction survey to 500-plus local residents. Volunteers tackled administrative tasks and used their organizational skills to ensure this project was carried out accurately and efficiently. In addition to these projects, past volunteer efforts have included the Spring into Health initiative, an outdoor walking program, and numerous regular or one-off assignments that support and enrich our work.

Dorothy Ford, who volunteers in the community in countless different ways, including a long-term commitment to the PCN, says that she volunteers with Bow Valley PCN because, “I just like to busy myself with things that help the community we live in. The PCN offers a great many programs that are very worthwhile for everyday living…and they are free.”

PCN Executive Director, Yvette Penman, adds, “The work our volunteers do is invaluable. We are truly fortunate to have them working with us and the Awards celebration gave us a perfect opportunity to acknowledge all their hard work publicly.”
