The Bow Valley Primary Care Network's (PCN) Active Living Consultants offer guidance to patients who are experiencing back pain to reduce symptoms (and future flair ups) through physical activity prescription and education. Three program options are available:
Activity Rx (prescription)
1:1 Consultation with an Active Living Consultant
6 week Supervised Exercise Program.
Option 1: Activity Rx (prescription)Work with your family physician to develop an activity prescription that is right for you! You will have the opportunity to follow up with a Bow Valley PCN Active Living Consultant if desired.
Option 2: Active Living Individual ConsultationThe Bow Valley PCN Active Living Consultants provide 1:1 appointments to educate you about physical activity and managing back pain.
Option 3: Supervised Group Exercise ProgramA 6 week (1 hr/week) program where you will be guided through specific exercises and education topics to help reduce back pain symptoms and decrease future flair-ups.

Where is BACKtivity offered?The Bow Valley PCN has offices in Banff and Canmore. For the BACKtivity Program, we offer group sessions in Canmore and 1:1 consults in both communities.
What is the best way to recover from a back pain flair up?Previously doctors would recommend bed rest but this is a thing of the past. Exercise is the best way to relieve lower back pain. Avoid specific exercises that 'flare up' your back pain.
Do I need an MRI or CT scan?Scans such as MRIs, CTs and Xrays are often unnecessary for determining the reason for your pain. An MRI or CT scan may be suggested by your physician if you have "red flags" to do so. Ask your doctor for more information.
